About East Asian Santa
Across East Asia, Santa has been adapted in different ways that blend Western Christmas imagery with local culture. In China, Shengdan Laoren is often accompanied by young women in red costumes known as his sisters rather than elves, and is largely a non-religious, commercial figure said to live in a North Pole village in Mohe, China's northernmost city. In South Korea, Santa Haraboji, or Grandfather Santa, sometimes wears a traditional Korean gat with his red suit, while Japan's Santa Kurōsu is widely seen in modern retail advertising, festive decorations, and as a figure who brings toys and sweets to children.
While the modern Santa image is Western, the original Saint Nicholas was a 4th-century bishop born in Myra, located in modern-day Turkey, making the earliest figure part of Asia Minor. East Asian Santa celebrates this wider history and helps more children feel seen in the magic of the season, showing that Christmas generosity, imagination, and festive wonder can belong to every family and every background.
